Fire destroys century-old building in Vincennes

VINCENNES, IN (WFIE) -

Investigators are trying to determine what caused a fire that burned through the roof and gutted a century-old commercial building in southwestern Indiana.

The Vincennes fire chief says streets alongside the two-story triangular brick building will remain closed until it can be demolished.

Chief Gordon Becher tells the Vincennes Sun-Commercial (http://bit.ly/1dJVSJ3 ) that the building was a safety hazard because it could collapse.

Firefighters were called to the building Monday and found flames shooting from it when they arrived. Becher says the structure was vacant and the fire apparently started in the second floor, which was without electricity or natural gas service.

The building was constructed in 1908 and has housed at various times a drug store and restaurants over the years.
