LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – "I found a body that was laying down face down on the ground."
A mother of two young girls was shaken up after finding a woman's dead body while throwing out the trash Saturday morning. The body was behind her fence at her home in the 1200 block of Phyllis Avenue, just blocks from Churchill Downs.
"I ran in the house and locked the doors and called 911," Danielle Terry explained.
Terry says she thought the woman may have overdosed. She saw no clear signs of trauma.
"It's 'gonna be something that's 'gonna take a while for me to 'kinda get past," Terry said.
At first, Louisville Metro Police called it a death investigation. But after an autopsy, they believe the woman was killed.
"It's just sad, anytime you find someone's been murdered, you know," a neighbor, Tim Miller said.
The scene came as a shock to neighbors. Miller has lived on the block for more than 20 years.
"It's just an eerie feeling, you know, when your neighbor walks out and finds someone dead in the ally by the garbage can," Miller said. "It's kind of scary."
Police have not said who the woman might be or how she was killed. She was in her early fifties.
Terry is left to wonder what happened and why.
"All I keep thinking was, 'Why was this my house.' I would have never expected anything like this to happen at my residence," Terry said.
