Taking a Stand: Applauding WeTip's confidentiality

(WFIE) -

I'm disturbed by a story out of Miami, Florida, where a judge asked the head of their Crime Stoppers program to reveal the true identity of their confidential tipsters.

Richard Masten even went so far as to eat the piece of paper with the information on it, and the judge held him in contempt.

The prosecutor for Vanderburgh County also came out against the judge's decision, reemphasizing the importance these anonymous tips play in solving crimes, and catching criminals.

I applaud our prosecutor for choosing We Tip, which is 100% anonymous.

Folks, I don't care where the tips come from but programs like these make our communities safer! That's a fact!

14News has shown you how well this program works!

These tips have led to the arrest of park vandals, meth cookers, shooting suspects, and it's reasons like those that this service must be protected.

If you have a tip, I encourage you to call We Tip at 1-800-78-CRIME.

I'm proud of the stand Mr. Masten took to protect the CrimeStoppers program and programs like We Tip here in Vanderburgh County. That's my stand.
