New eatery springing up on Franklin Street

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

There's a new sort of eatery about to spring up on Franklin Street in Evansville.

It's not a bar or restaurant, it's a community garden.

The Franklin Street Community Garden is across the street from Pierre Funeral Home, in the middle of a block of homes.

Earlier this week more than 30 people got together to talk about the garden and how it will work. They're going to be putting in raised beds.

Some of them will be sponsored by Franklin Street businesses and that produce will go to the business' employees.

Organizers say that is an added benefit for those employees who live nearby and may not have the opportunity to grow their own fresh produce.

"The beds in the front of the community garden are going to be designated to our neighbors here," said Karen Conaway. "They're going to be helping us on a daily basis, so in return we'd love to share that produce with them."

There are still two things they're looking for: Volunteers and corporate sponsors to help team up with some of the non profits they're going to be working with.

Be on the lookout for things to get up and growing later this spring.
