EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - Demolition began Friday at the old Swanson Nunn building on Southeast Eighth Street in Evansville.
The Swanson Nunn building once housed a dry cleaning business and then an electrical repair business.
A $1.2 million dollar insurance settlement was reached in 2012 to pay for the demolition and cleanup.
There have been concerns about the state of the abandoned building and the fact that dry cleaning chemicals were once used there.
The former owner, Jack Buttrum, watched as demolition began. He says it's bittersweet.
"It's been an eyesore in the area and I've hated that so I've been glad that it's coming down," said Jack. "On the other hand, there's a bit of an emotion there too. It was good to me."
The work should take about three weeks.
Debris will be removed from the lot, it will be backfilled, graded and seeded.
