Local fraternal club excludes women in a major vote on smoking

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - Five weeks after the Indiana Supreme Court reversed Evansville's smoking ban, a local fraternal club voted Thursday night on whether to allow smoking again but excluded some members for the vote.

All 200 female members were not allowed to participate in the vote.

When asked if female members are upset about not having a vote, Club President Stephan Elliott answered, "I would say yes."

Elliott said the River City Eagles' social room was smoking prior to June 2012 when the city's smoking ban was enacted and that the private club can make its own laws.

The Eagles voted to remain a non-smoking fraternal club.
