LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A basketball-loving bear bounces from game to game, hoping to bring awareness to everyone he meets.

Louie the Bear may have been "born" at Build-a-Bear Workshop, but he's been several places since. His owner, Robert Valvano, works at ESPN, and where you see Valvano, you can be sure Louie is close by.

But Louie does more than pose for photos and cuddle courtside, Valvano created Louie to create awareness about cancer and create funds for cancer research through the V Foundation for Cancer Research.

Valvano said he was inspired to use Louie after the younger brother of his son's girlfriend brought home a Flat Stanley character for a class assignment.

"Stanley came with Louisville to the national championship," Valvano said. "Everyone seemed to get a charge out of it, so I thought about combining it with this adorable bear and seeing if we could raise awareness and some money in the fight against cancer."

We're told the military donated the structure, but one Henderson Police officer spent a year building up the inside using donated materials. HPD's Sergeant Jeff Welch showed us his work and he said it's the first facility of its kind in the region.
