LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A suspected drunk driver killed an infant and severely injured another just after midnight Saturday morning.
According to police, a collision occurred at the intersection of 18th and Cedar Streets. Witnesses said the driver of a Dodge Dakota truck was traveling westbound on Cedar and ran the stop sign. He then hit a Ford Windstar minivan traveling southbound on 18th.
Police said the Ford had the right of way. The force of the accident caused the van to rotate and strike a utility pole, according to detectives.
Twin infants, passengers in the Ford, were transported to Kosair Children's Hospital. Avani Ingram, five months old, died at Kosair Children's Hospital 1 a.m. Saturday. The other is listed in critical, but stable condition. The children lived in Warsaw Kentucky.
According to police, the driver of the Dodge has been identified as James O'Bannon, 51. He was transported to University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash.
O'Bannon's charges include murder, three counts of assault, two counts of wanton endangerment, DUI, driving on a suspended license and no insurance. O'Bannon had a previous DUI which is why his license was suspended.
The Ford was driven by the mother of the infants and she had three other juveniles with her. A 15-year-old and 14-year-old were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver and a third juvenile were uninjured.
Police said no one else was in the truck with O'Bannon.
