Kiwanis Club names Evansville's 2013 Firefighter of the Year

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Mike Doran was chosen today as the 2013 Firefighter of the Year for his service to the department and the community.

For the last twenty-four years, the Green River Kiwanis Club has honored one firefighter every year who goes above and beyond their job description with the Firefighter of the Year award.

Evansville firefighters nominate their peers for the award. Then the Green River Kiwanis club decide who has best served the firefighting community and the community as a whole during the previous year.

They considered merit awards and commendations, a firefighter's time with the department and any service commitments the firefighters have outside of work.

Doran was nominated for his service to the community, specifically for his work with 911 Gives Hope. A former amateur boxer, Doran is a long-time participant in the annual Guns & Hoses event.

Doran tells us that all this year's nominees are stellar firefighters and men and all of them deserved to win.
