GIBSON CO., IN (WFIE) -

Two Gibson Southern High School students were hurt in a head-on ATV accident Tuesday night.

It happened around 7:30 on a private drive near U.S. 41 and County Road 1025.

According to investigators, 16-year-old Isaac Sollman and 17-year-old Grant Zilliak, both from Haubstadt, and a third friend were riding four-wheelers on the Sollman family property.

As Sollman and Zilliak approached each other while riding on a lane, they collided head-on.

Authorities say a witness called 911 and tried to stabilize them. Both teens were flown to hospitals in Evansville with serious injuries.

Ziliak was taken to St. Mary's and has since been transferred to IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis in critical condition. We're told Sollman is in critical condition at Deaconess.

Authorities say neither teen was wearing a helmet and they suspect speed and low visibility are factors in the accident. Officials want to stress that they do not believe drugs or alcohol are a factor.

The ATVs were inspected to make sure the safety features were functioning properly. The accident remains under investigation.
