MADISON, IN (WAVE) – The U.S. 421 Milton-Madison Bridge spanning the Ohio River was closed suddenly, unexpectedly and until further notice early Tuesday morning after an accident that injured a construction worker.
According to the Milton-Madison Bridge Project, crews closed the bridge around 2 a.m. Tuesday after a steel bearing, about four-feet in diameter, dislodged between the bridge and a pier. The project manager closed the bridge believing it is unsafe to cross.
The worker was not seriously injured.
The bridge was due to be reduced to one lane on Thursday and to close completely on Friday for about a week. Now, the bridge will remain closed until the new bridge is slid into place, a process that is scheduled to begin on Thursday.
According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, drivers relying on the U.S. 421 bridge connecting Madison, Indiana and Milton, Kentucky will be rerouted to one of two other bridges – the Markland Locks and Dam Bridge connecting Kentucky Route 1039 and Indiana State Road 101, which is 26 miles upstream, or the Interstate 65 Kennedy Bridge connecting Jeffersonville and Louisville, 46 miles downstream.
