New number makes it easier to become volunteer firefighter in Kentucky

Posted: Updated:
KENTUCKY (WFIE) -

There's a new toll-free telephone service for those interested in becoming volunteer firefighters in Kentucky.

The number 1-800-FIRELINE (34735463) connects you with the Kentucky State Fire Rescue Training Volunteer Recruitment Service which will take your information and pass it to the appropriate fire department in your area.

Officials say the number of volunteer firefighters across the country since 1984 has dropped by 13%, but the number of emergency calls over the last 25 years has tripled.

"As we respond to more calls, we need more volunteers all the time," said Shane Rigney. "Some departments are definitely better off than other departments. There are opportunities for people to volunteer across the board.  However some people just don't know how about to get in contact to volunteer."

Officials hope this will help raise the number of volunteers throughout the commonwealth.
