Spencer Co. man returns home from deployment

SPENCER CO., IN (WFIE) -

First Lieutenant Matt Small is now home from deployment.

The South Spencer High School graduate has been stationed in Afghanistan for the past nine months.

Last year, with Matt being a health nut, he made a commitment to run 1,000 miles during his deployment and the Spencer County community joined in. It all started with the Facebook page, Miles with Matt.

Matt ran 150 times in just 133 days during his ninth month deployment. On the clock, he ran a total of five days, three hours and 24 minutes. He says his best runs included a 30-mile trek he completed in just over four hours.

Matt returned to the base at Fort Knox late Tuesday night. His mom, Rita, tells 14 News that he'll be at Fort Knox for the next six months and then he'll be in Georgia for six months.

She says that it's a career for Matt and that he says there will always be another deployment.

Matt and his family went to the Mellow Mushroom after the ceremony, his mom saying all he wanted was his favorite pizza.

Even though he is back home now, the Miles for Matt group is still going and supporters are still working toward their 1,000 miles.
