Local runner qualified for Boston Marathon to remember victims

Posted: Updated:

A local runner is remembering the victims of last year's Boston Marathon bombing that wounded dozens and killed three.

Kevin Gerteisen wanted to be running in the 2013 Boston Marathon but wasn't able to qualify. After he saw the bombings from the event, he knew he wanted to be there this year.

Gerteisen has been running for the past nine years and has always had the goal of qualifying for the marathon.

Just one week after the bombings, he was talking with a runner before a marathon who was in Boston during the attack. The runner told him that he was going to qualify that day.

Not only did he qualify, he did so by 12 minutes. Now Gerteisen says he can't wait to be a part of the race to remember the victims.

"There's actually ten of us from the area, that I know of, that are going. We're all going to get there, enjoy the time and just relish the memories. Because, with what happened last year, we can't get those times back," Gerteisen says.

The Boston Marathon is on Patriot Day which is April 21.

Gerteisen says his goal for the race is to break three hours. He's already qualified for the 2015 Boston Marathon as well.
