Free smoke detectors given out in honor of Watsons

Posted: Updated:

A Muhlenberg County church gave away free smoke detectors on Saturday in honor of the nine members of the Watson family who died in a house fire.

Kentucky State Police say they are unsure if there were any smoke detectors in the Watsons home at the time of the fire because they were never able to find evidence of them.

Members of the Awakening Community Church says they spent over $1,000 to buy 288 smoke detectors.

Every family who visited the church received one smoke detector for every bedroom in their house.

Members of local fire stations were on-call to help with installation process.

There will be other events to honor the Watson family in the next few weeks.

On March 29th, there will be a pageant for anyone of all ages.

Registration begins at 12. The pageant will begin at 1:00.

Kylie Watson, a surviving family member, will crown the winner.

On April 27th, The Awakening Community Church Heroes Series will conclude with a speech from a true hero: Chad Watson.
