Springfield police and animal control officers rescued several animals during two raids on Friday.
Police ascended on a home located at 36 Fort Pleasant Ave. in the city's Forest Park Section just after 4 p.m. Police say 11 people were arrested.
They confiscated 215 bags of heroin, along with 11 bags of cocaine and several other drugs.
Police arrived for the drug raid, but the focus of the operation turned when they realized several pit bulls were in need of help inside the home.
Animal control was then called in to help assist with the dogs.
"The police informed us that there were five pit bulls in the house," said Renee Robichaud, an animal control officer from the Thomas J. O'Connor Adoption Center.
Robichaud said the dogs were housed in poor living conditions.
"One was under the front porch, one in a closet and three more in the basement," said Robichaud.
One of the dogs in the basement was tied to a furnace with two others left in crates.
A total of six dogs were taken from the house. Robichaud said the entire ordeal has taken a toll on their bodies.
"They're very timid, unsociable with people, but mostly they're just shut down," she explained.
But fortunately, Robichaud said the animals seemed to be in pretty good health.
"They definitely looked to be fed regularly and cared for to some standard," said Robichaud.
An owner has yet to claim the dogs.
They were taken to the TJO Adoption Center where they are given food, water and a place to relax.
Pam Peebles is the executive director of the center.
She said the dogs will be assessed and taken care of before possibly going up for adoption.
"We'll give them treats and bedding before we can see if these guys will be good companions," said Peebles.
Three snakes were also rescued during a separate raid that took place Friday morning.
Police said around 8:20 a.m. they arrested Joseph Darco, 24, of 280 Walnut St. on an outstanding warrant for armed robbery and possession of cocaine.
Animal control said once police identify the owner of all the animals, they will likely be cited.
