A new Evansville-Vanderburgh Co. EMA director has been appointed.
On Thursday, the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Emergency Advisory Council appointed Cliff A. Weaver as the new executive director of the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Emergency Management Agency, effective April 7.
Weaver, a former Evansville Fire Department Battalion Chief, has been serving as the interim director of the EMA since July 2013.
"Cliff Weaver‘s background in the military, plus years of training as a paramedic and a first responder makes him immensely qualified to lead the local Emergency Management Agency. He has my full confidence," said Mayor Winnecke. "During the short time Cliff has headed the EMA he has worked diligently to inventory the agency's assets while strengthening relationships with the Indiana Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security."
Weaver stated, "It has been an honor and a privilege to have been an Evansville Firefighter for the last 29 years. I am now looking forward to the new challenges with the mission of the Emergency Management Agency."
Weaver joined the U.S. Air Force in 1972 and served as an air traffic controller stationed at Ft. Campbell, Ky. He was a Flight Team Paramedic with St. Mary's Life Flight from 1985 to 2008. During that time, Weaver joined the Evansville Fire Department in 1985, holding various leadership roles including Chief of Special Operations, Chief of Fire Operations and Chief of Fire Marshal and Investigations.
In 1995, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security selected Weaver as Commander of the Indiana District Response Task Force-10, a position he currently holds today. Weaver has also served as an
Indiana US&R Task Force One HAZMAT Specialist for the U.S. Homeland Security/Federal Emergency Management Agency since 2004 and Search Team Manager with Ohio Valley Search and Rescue since 1991.
Weaver has received numerous certifications in emergency management, paramedic training and hazardous materials from such institutions as the National Fire Academy, the Center for Domestic Preparedness, the University of Maryland, Florida State College, Vincennes University and the University of Evansville.
In the fall of 2013, Weaver earned certification as a Professional Emergency Manager from the Indiana Department of Homeland Security.
"During my career in public safety I have witnessed several life-changing events, including Hurricane Sandy in New York; Hurricane Ike in Galveston, Texas; and an F-3 tornado at home in Evansville," Weaver said. "These events have reinforced how important it is to be prepared to deal with disasters and emergencies in our communities."
