INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana Gov. Mike Pence is highlighting the work of an Indianapolis preschool as he makes a final attempt to ply lawmakers for an early education voucher plan.
Pence spoke to students at the Shepherd Community Center Wednesday, and later said the preschool is one of many needing the state's aid.
The governor never offered his own proposal, but instead threw his support behind a House Republican plan that would have established a pilot program. But the measure ran into concerns in the Senate, where lawmakers amended it to create a committee that would study the issue.
Pence's agenda has struggled to gain traction in the General Assembly during his second session. Other key measures backed by the governor have either been delayed or watered down.
