BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Moments before quitting time for a construction crew working on Highway 17 in Brunswick County Monday evening, a traffic accident happened right before their eyes.

A large truck flipped upside down with the driver stuck inside.

At that moment, the lives of Thomas Gee, Rick Crane, Manuel Hernandez, Alfonzo Hernandez, Juan Diego-Hernandez, and Celendonio Juarez changed.

The men were building a new gas station at the intersection of Highway 17 and Old Ocean Highway in Bolivia at the time of the accident.

"We stopped for a second," Gee recalled. "I was sitting in the dozer, and we just heard a big crash and look over a see a truck flipping so we started running."

The six men rushed across four lanes of traffic, dodging twisted metal and debris, to reach the accident.

"I thought I was running over to see a dead man in a truck," said Gee.

The crew was able to quickly pull the driver out of the truck, and their quick thinking helped saved the man's life.

"A lot of accident situations, you don't want to move the injured person," explained Crane. "But there could have been a fire, so that's why we went at it."

The driver involved in the car accident was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and is expected to be okay.

It's back to work for this crew of unlikely heroes, but instead of just carrying shovels and hammers they're carrying a new lease on life.

"It's kind of an eye opener to be more careful out there and give somebody a break," said Crane. "Just drive a little more careful out there."
