'Road Diet' project to reduce lanes on select Evansville roads

Posted: Updated:

Many Evansville roads will soon be introduced to the 'Road Diet'.

City Engineer Pat Keepes says a few east-side roads, like Lincoln Ave to Ravenswood Dr, have already been reduced to one lanes roads with a middle turn lane.

The plan is to narrow the number of lanes on Covert Ave from Hwy 41 east to I-164 and Weinbach from the Lloyd Expressway south to Pollack.

"We create more clear distance on the outside lanes, which is good for motorists and it also encouraged bicycle usage as well," said Pat Keepes.

Keepes says 80% of both projects will be federally funded.

A design firm will be chosen next week and work could begin within the next two to three years.
