HOPKINS CO., KY (WFIE) - On Wednesday afternoon, Joanie Fox's kids got off the school bus like they normally do on Eastside Lane in Hopkins County.
The children, who are both under 10 years old, starting playing.
What Fox saw next won't leave her memory anytime soon, "and they were sitting there pulling the trigger at each other."
The kids had found a fully-loaded 380 caliber pistol lying in the field next to their homes.
"I didn't know if it was real or fake so I was telling them to get away from it," said Fox.
A neighbor came out to look at the handgun, "She picked it up, she pulled out the clip. She said 'girl it's real and it's loaded'".
Fox says her kids have never been around guns,"my son thought it was a toy gun and he's eight."
Madisonville police impounded the gun into evidence.
Police stress that parents need to educate their kids never to play with guns, even if they think its a fake.
Joanie knows Wednesday could have ended much differently, "I had an anxiety attack like I was terrified. I could have lost one of my kids yesterday."
