ANDERSON, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Anderson County PAWS took in more than 100 animals from a rescue group for lack of care and "improper feeding" on Wednesday, according to officials.
Sheila Cole of the Anderson County Sheriff's Office said on Feb. 4 deputies got a search warrant to check the condition of the dogs at Golden S. Rescue on Hamlin Road in Easley.
At the property, officers found several dogs in kennels kept in unsanitary, unhealthy conditions, Cole said.
The rescue group owner Debra Sheridan gave investigators permission to search the property where they found 40 to 60 dogs to be "extremely emaciated," according to Cole.
Eleven of the dogs were seized and Sheridan was arrested and charged with two counts of ill treatment toward animals, Cole said.
Cole said animal control officers conducted a follow-up and well-being check on Wednesday when they found the conditions had not improved.
A new search warrant was obtained and the remaining 119 animals were seized and transported to Anderson County PAWS, according to Cole.
Sheridan was cited for one count of ill treatment and one count of improper burial.
Sheridan said she is being unjustly cited. She said all of the animals in her care were adopted from shelters just before they were put down, and that is why they were in poor medical condition.
Her court date is set for March 31.
PAWS will be closed through Saturday in order to process the large number of incoming animals. They posted on their Facebook page that people wishing to donate supplies can drop them off at their shelter and check their online wish list here.
Cole said the case is still under investigation.
