Owensboro mayor defends idea to change I-69 route

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

Owensboro Mayor Ron Payne is defending his idea to change the route of I-69.

Payne says having the interstate near Owensboro will save tax payers money by using the existing William H. Natcher Bridge in Daviess County instead of building a more than $1 billion bridge near Henderson and Evansville.

"I think what we need to do is back up, take a look at this for ourselves and ask ourselves what is the most efficient and economical route in terms of time and money," Payne says.

He says he met with a representative from Senator Rand Paul's office Tuesday afternoon to ask the senator to take another look at rerouting I-69 through Owensboro.
