Plans for I-69 in works, some suggesting different route

Posted: Updated:

Plans for I-69 to go through Evansville and Henderson have been in the works for years. Now, Owensboro Mayor Ron Payne is suggesting a different route.

One of the only connections between Kentucky and Indiana right now are the Twin Bridges. The I-69 project will be geared towards putting a faster route between the two states.

When completed, I-69 is expected to stretch from Canada to Mexico. Hundreds of millions of dollars have already been allocated for the project.

After years of planning, Payne is trying to appeal to Kentucky Senator Rand Paul to bring the project through Owensboro.

Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke says the plan would make Evansville a cul-de-sac.

"It's tremendously important to Evansville. Not just to Evansville, but to Henderson, Madisonville and Hopkinsville communities in western Kentucky and southwest Indiana have been planning for the I-69 corridor for decades," Winnecke says.

Henderson mayor Steve Austin says Payne's plan is just illogical.

14 News reached out to Payne on Monday, but he wasn't available for a comment.

There's still no word yet on where the possible bridge could be built.
