Travelers, soldiers stranded at Richmond International Airport

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

Travelers take note, you may be disappointed if you have plans to fly out soon. Most flights out of Richmond have been canceled.

Many weary travelers found out just minutes before boarding, including soldiers trying to get home to loved ones.

Captain Jonathan Kimble, a newlywed on four days leave, hopes to see his wife in California for their first Valentine's Day.

"I had to come back here for school, so I haven't seen her much," said Captain Kimble.

Unfortunately, Mother Nature isn't letting him go.

"They actually said the flight was delayed, and then I received a second text saying it was delayed until 11, and I arrived here at 11 and it was canceled," said Captain Kimble.

Three soldiers are looking to drive. They also had big plans for girlfriends back home, including Private 2nd Class Marc Spencer.

"Hopefully, if the flight don't get canceled tomorrow, then it'll still work out for my plans, but right now it ain't' looking so good," he said.

Airport leaders say they've had a record number of flight cancellations and it's leading to unusual scenes like an empty baggage claim. They want travelers to be aware.  While runways here are clear, problems in airports across the east coast and south are causing this trickle down effect.

"It's probably going to be another day or two before it feels like we're anything close to a normal schedule," says airport spokesperson Troy Bell.

Captain Kimble hopes his wife gets this message, "I apologize and I'm very sorry if I don't make it but I hope I can."

But he says, at least he sent her flowers.

Airport officials say always say check your flight early in the morning to make sure you have a plan, in case it's canceled. So far airport leaders say just for February, there have been three 330 flight cancellations for Richmond.
