Restructuring to affect Tell City's Ivy Tech

Posted: Updated:
TELL CITY, IN (WFIE) -

Ivy Tech announced this week it will be combining it's Bloomington and Southwest Indiana regions and appoint one chancellor to oversee them.

14 News hears this will have implications for the future of Ivy Tech in Tell City.

While the restructuring of Ivy Tech's Southwest Indiana region does include the Tell City branch, Tell City Mayor Barbara Ewing says the branch's future is still uncertain, as the city and the school are still working out a new lease agreement.

Last summer, Ivy Tech officials announced they might close as many as 20 campuses due to high costs.

The Tell City campus was one of the 20 that could potentially get the boot, but the new restructuring plan, indicates the school plans to retain it.

But Ewing says that's not for certain at this point.

"While the situation is what I would classify 'not as grim as what it was initially,' it is not yet concluded. As a community, through our Tell City Economic Development Commission, we are in communication and discussion with Ivy Tech on the terms of the current lease, and how that can be altered, in an effort to keep Ivy Tech here in the community," Ewing said.

Ewing says she hopes to have plans finalized for Tell City's Ivy Tech branch by next month.
