Warrick Co. third graders paint for cancer patients

Posted: Updated:

Some young artists put their talents to good use on Monday.

More than 30 third graders at St. John The Baptist School in Newburgh hand painted silk scarves through Project Angel Hugs.

The scarves will be blessed at a school mass, then given to local cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy.

While they painted, the students were asked to think about and pray for those who would receive their scarves.

"I hope they think about how we're trying to help and we think that we can help make them feel better," student Josey Herr said.

"I feel like this is one of those tools that they take with them far beyond the classroom, beyond the multiplication tables and the cursive writing and all of that. Something where they can just learn that compassion for other people and being there in need," said Principal Elizabeth Flatt.

The  project  dedicated to those who have battled cancer, especially former St. John's teacher, Becky Schnur, who passed away one year ago this week.
