Committee could form to decide future of old courthouse

Posted: Updated:

A  committee may be formed to help decide the future of the old Vanderburgh County Courthouse and Coliseum in downtown Evansville.

Members of the council say the county is set to lose thousands on the two buildings again this year. They're considering forming a committee to get the 'financial drains on the right track.'

The idea of a committee was thrown around during the council's meeting Wednesday morning. County Council President Tom Shetler says members are trying to incorporate some better business practices into the old courthouse.
He says the committee would include business people, real estate people, who can turn around a dismal financial situation.

"The county is on a very tight fiscal budget. We need to tighten up everything we possibly can and I'm not saying it should be a profit center, but we certainly can't lose money on it like it has been and it's been a real drain," Shelter said.

Recent renovations cost the county about $200,000. Shetler says it's time to get the county's 'fiscal house in order.'
