HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

School board members are listening to arguments Tuesday morning in a termination hearing for a Hillsborough County teacher who was suspended after a special needs student wandered away from campus and walked six miles home.

Ingrid Peavy was a teacher at Pierce Middle School during the incident in October 2012.

The school board's attorney said Peavy is being recommended for termination because of a finding by child protection investigators, not because of the specifics of the case.

Witnesses called by Peavy's attorneys said the student – who was not named – often did not show up for class.

Peavy said the day that the student left campus she assumed he was in the main office with another employee, as was often the case, but did not call to check on his whereabouts.

"On that day I thought it was like any other day," Peavy said.

However, one school board member said the recent death of another student – Jenny Caballero – who had wandered away from campus and drowned days earlier should have raised concern.

"The news headlines of October 22 should have put you on high alert," board member Stacy White said.
