HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -
The State Fair and Strawberry Festival in Hillsborough County are places for food, families and fun.

A weeklong gang sweep by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's office is trying to keep it that way.

Deputy Stephen Pierson is part of the street crimes unit of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's office and is a part of the week long look at gang activity in the Plant City and Dover areas of the county.

"Rival gang members tend to go the fair, and Strawberry Festival and cause issues for the fair and actually make it dangerous for children or anything like that or a family atmosphere,” said Pierson.

Pierson says a primary objective of the operation is to let known gang members know the sheriff's office is keeping an eye on them.

"It's helping clean up the community, it's helping the community know we're not going to let gangs take over Hillsborough County and we're not going to let them take over this area,” said Pierson.

The Sheriff's Office says the effort netted more than 15 arrests and the seizure of drugs, weapons and ammunition.
