The Red Cross is asking for volunteers to roll up their sleeves.
Officials say the winter months are normally a slow time for donations. More than 400 blood drives had to be canceled because of the weather conditions across the Midwest.
The region is down about 12,000 units. The Red Cross says donations are needed just to meet current obligations.
"We have commitments to hospitals for that blood," said Amy Canterbury. "In the event that someone has surgery scheduled, or has a need or an emergency, it's so important to fulfill the needs of the hospitals to make sure the surgeries that they do have scheduled and their blood supplies are kept intact."
