Water break at Tecumseh causes early dismissal

Posted: Updated:

Evansville city officials say crews are working on more than 20 water main breaks, including one on Maryland Street just down the hill from the 14 News studios.

One break in Warrick County gave some students part of the day off.

Tecumseh Junior-Senior High students went to school on Wednesday, but they were released at 11:30 a.m. because of that water main break in the receiving room.

School principal Richard Lance says the head custodian noticed the break in the receiving room Tuesday evening. He says the maintenance crew arrived at 5:00 Wednesday morning to start working on the cracked pipe.

Lance says when conditions didn't improve around 9:00 a.m., administrators decided to release students early.

They say things should be back to normal for school on Thursday.

"The pipe should be replaced and everything should be back to normal for a full day. We applied for a waiver, the central office did that this morning. At about 9:30, they were getting all the paperwork taken care of so we could take care of this day and be on normal schedule," Lance says.

That waiver with the State Department of Education would mean students would not have to make up the school day.
