HB1341, a bill would require scooters to be registered with the BMV and have some sort of license plate, passed 9-0 in committee today.
The proposal does not mandate that drivers be licensed or have insurance like some local officials have wanted.
According to the city, the bill also creates one definition - motor-driven vehicles - for scooters and mopeds in order to eliminate confusion.
Last year, Evansville Police handled nearly 300 cases of scooter theft. Many of those scooters were never recovered.
The bill now moves to the full House for consideration.
