Memorial remembers those lost in '77 UE plane crash

Posted: Updated:

A special dedication took place Sunday at the Ford Center.

It was a memorial to honor those who lost their lives in a plane crash on December 13, 1977. 29 people, 14 of those who were members of the University of Evansville basketball team, died when that plane crashed.

Family and friends were at the Ford Center on Sunday, as one father put it, "finalizing" the events that happened nearly 40 years ago.

The area surrounding the memorial wall was crowded. A Ford Center employee told 14 News that it was much more crowded than expected.

The faces on the wall hold a special place in the hearts of the community and, as family members say, it has gotten easier, but it is never easy. They say the faces and people are gone, but they are not forgotten.

"We have missed him all these years. Many times his sister, Julie, and his younger brother, David, many times they say, 'I wonder what Mark would have really been like,'" said Ed Siegel, the father of a 1977 player.
