Posey County just completed a study focused on a jail expansion project.
Posey County Sheriff Greg Oeth tells 14 News that construction is not going to happen for a few years. However, the planning process is underway.
Oeth says that although the jail has been over-crowded in the past, that is not the only reason for the expansion. He says a new jail would benefit the county.
"If we can recognize some areas where we can turn that facility into a revenue generating facility, then those are some things we want to explore to take the burden off of the tax payer and put the burden on the individuals who are the offenders," Oeth says.
Right now, Oeth says he hopes to double the size of the building. The new addition would become the new jail and the existing space would become a community corrections and work release facility.
Officials will be meeting within the next few months to discuss the jail expansion project in more detail.
