HANCOCK CO., KY (WFIE) -

Kentucky State Police are investigating a shooting involving an off-duty deputy in Hancock County.

The incident happened on KY 2181, outside of Hawesville, around 12:30 Wednesday afternoon.

Kentucky State Police received a call from Hancock County Dispatch saying they had a report of a man who was headed to the house of 50-year-old Kenneth Eubanks, a Hancock County Sheriff's deputy. Eubanks was off-duty at the time.

KSP tells 14 News that Eubanks saw 43-year-old Harold Lewis Powers, of Lewisport, leave his vehicle with a firearm. Authorities say Eubanks confronted Powers on his front porch. At that point, Powers shot at Eubanks, who returned fire, and hit Powers in the chest.

Powers was taken to Perry County Memorial Hospital in Tell City, where he later died.

Eubanks was not injured.
