Memorial expansion project affects area traffic

Posted: Updated:

A once busy Evansville intersection is now permanently closed and some neighbors are dreading the changes still to come.

Lodge Avenue is closed between Lincoln Avenue and Walnut Street while crews are moving utilities for the expansion project at Memorial High School.

The expansion includes a new parking lot for the school, as well as a soccer field that will permanently close Lodge as a through street between Lincoln and Walnut. Then, just one block east, Bennighof Avenue has been turned into a one way street heading north.

One resident who lives on Bennighof says it's all a little confusing as the construction begins to ramp up.

"It's puts a thwart in everybody's events across the street and causes people to kind of cluster up around my house. It makes it a little harder to get anywhere. You get cars going this way, that way and then there's a one way that way. So, there's no through traffic going through actually," Derek Hall says.

Bennighof will go back to a two way once the project is finished.

Lincoln Avenue will be closed at Lodge Avenue starting on Wednesday for some sewer line relocation. That closure will be for up to two weeks

The whole project is scheduled to be done on July 1.
