The Owensboro Human Relations Commission is inviting people in the community to join them for their annual Martin Luther King Day March on January 20. The theme for this year's event is "Be The Change Agent: It's Our Charge to Make it Better." The march will begin at the Owensboro High School and end at Brescia University.
Following the march, there will be a celebration service in the Taylor Lecture Hall-Science Building at Brescia University. The Associate Dean of Students and Diversity from the Owensboro Community and Technical College, Mr. Lewatis McNeal, MPH will be the keynote speaker.
This year the Commission is including a service component to the day's event. They will bring awareness to socio-economic issues that are affecting people in the community.
People will have a chance to address this issue by filling out a "Stand with Us" postcard that will be sent to the governor and state legislators. At the end of the program, organizers will take up a special offering for the St. Benedict's Shelter.
The money will go to help the shelter purchase additional beds and supplies. Following the service, there will be a reception in the university's cafeteria.
Anyone is invited to attend. People will start to gather in the Owensboro High School Gymnasium at 8:30 am, and the march will begin at 9:00 am.
