Reward offered after whooping crane shot

Posted: Updated:

The United States Fish and Wildlife Service is asking for your help to find out who shot a whooping crane.

Officials said it happened near Pond River on the Hopkins and Muhlenberg County line in late November.

A $7,200 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest.

Federal Fish and Wildlife officials say whooping cranes are so endangered, there are only 500 in the U.S.

"It's of great concern that we lost two birds and specifically for the population that has been migrating through Hopkins and Muhlenberg counties, we had 6 last year so that's a very large number to lose this year," said Thomas Young.

Officials said the penalty for the crime could be a $100,000 fine and a year in federal prison.

If you have information, you are asked to call Fish and Wildlife Services at 1-800-25-ALERT (25378).
