Former Evansville police officer going to court to get job back

A former Evansville police officer is going to court to get his job back.

After a marathon meeting last month, the Police Merit Commission voted to fire Steve Hicks over an on-duty incident involving a woman working at a sports bar.

A later investigation by a special prosecutor concluded there was insufficient evidence to prove Hicks committed any crime. Hicks was never charged in the case.

The action filed in Vanderburgh Circuit Court is a petition for judicial review and seeks to have the merit commission decision reversed with the restoration of Hicks' full rank and back pay.
