The former River House Hotel in downtown Evansville may not become a renovated hotel after all. The current owner tells 14 News that he may sell property and it all has to do with parking.
We're told the annex of the old River House Hotel will be torn down to make way for more parking, but the owner says he's had to scrap his original hotel plans and may end up selling the property instead.
Owner George Yerolemou says the city told him the hotel doesn't have enough parking spaces to meet city code. He says that's one parking space per room and one space for every five employees at full staff.
His original plans called for 91 rooms. Now, he says he could only build 72 rooms.
Yerolemou is in the process of renovating the former Drury Inn along Highway 41, which he says will become a Comfort Inn and Suites, the branding originally planned for the River House.
Yerolemou says the city has not approached him about buying the hotel. He's hoping to have the former Drury Inn renovated and under its new name by mid-April.
