FRANKFORT, KY (WAVE) – A former University of Kentucky basketball star will be spending 27 months in a federal prison.

Richie Farmer, 44, learned his sentenced Tuesday for abusing his power during two terms as Kentucky's agriculture commissioner.

In September 2013, Farmer pled guilty to two counts of misappropriating government resources. Federal prosecutors said Farmer used state employees for personal errands and expected he hired friends into jobs to perform little or no work.

In addition to time in prison, Farmer was also ordered by U.S. District Judge Gregory Van Tatenhove to pay $120,500 in restitution to the state.

Farmer was the Republican candidate for lieutenant governor during the gubernatorial run of former Kentucky Senate President David Williams. Williams lost the election to incumbent governor Steve Beshear.
