Park director headed to Indy in hopes of funding for Roberts Park

Evansville's Parks Department Director is headed to Indianapolis to figure out ways to bring in money and get Roberts Park off the ground.

After the city council dropped funding for phase one of the park last year, Denise Johnson with the Parks Department says she's been focused on ways to bring "private funding sources" into play.

Johnson says she's travelling to Indianapolis on Tuesday where she'll meet with the parks foundation and engineers on how to develop more public-private partnerships.
She says she's also hoping to bring back ideas on how to incorporate educational opportunities through local universities and schools.
Johnson says she'll present those ideas to the parks foundation here and other organizations.

"We were always going to do this, so we always knew that we always had to look for this type of fundraising opportunity and partnerships. But yes, we need to find those pockets of money where they're available and get the job done," Johnson says.

The council voted in October to remove $1.5 million dollars in funding for the park. Mayor Lloyd Winnecke calls the Roberts Park project one of his top priorities in 2014.
