It's been brutal in the Tri-State when it comes to temperatures and it's causing some havoc when it comes to water.

Frigid temps caused a water main break at MLK and Vine in downtown Evansville. The mess left icy conditions for the Tuesday morning commute.

Another water main break occurred in the 3500 block of Bellemeade. That break has been fixed, however, Bellemeade between Lombard and St. Mary's Dr. is still closed as crews finish up the work.

One worker told our crew he'd been there since 11:30 Wednesday night.

Crews also responded to the scene of yet another main break on Evansville's west side where water is flowing from the University Village Shopping Complex.

"Last year at this time in January, there were 23 breaks. In February there were 17," said Mike Duckworth, the Evansville Water Superintendent.

There's been at least 10 in just the past two days.

"We have an older system. Some of our pipes are deteriorating, been there for 70-80 years, and that causes the breaks," said Duckworth said.

Duckworth says as of right now, the only major break they are still working on is the one at MLK and Vine Street. He says water will be shut off to the Federal Building and the downtown Post Office on Wednesday.

As for the boil advisories, three are in effect from the breaks on St. Joe and Ohio Street, Kentucky Avenue behind the jail, and in the 3300 block of East Blackford Avenue.
