Changes are coming to the leadership of Evansville City Council. Members were in session Monday evening to elect a new president and committee chairs.
In a unanimous vote, the council approved John Friend as its next president. He will take over, leaving his post as Finance Committee Chair.
Friend is set to replace outgoing president Connie Robinson. Robinson says she's stepping down to focus on her business.
Friend admits at times he has butted heads with Mayor Lloyd Winnecke, but some wonder how well he and the mayor will work together in his new role.
In a statement to 14 News, Mayor Winnecke writes, 'Our administration takes pride in the genuinely positive, collaborative manner in which we are governing the city. I look forward to working with the council, and its leadership to continue our positive progress. I'm confident that politics will not interfere with the work between the city council and the mayor's office during the next year.'
"I'm going to keep the politics out of things. If it's good for the city then it's good for everybody. Even if that puts me in a different position on political, that doesn't matter. What really counts is our people, our community," Friend said.
Friend's term as president is for one year. He says he's still planning an exploratory committee for a possible run for mayor in 2015.
The council elected Stephanie Brinkerhoff-Riley as Vice President.
