PERRY CO., IN (WFIE) -

An early morning wreck east of Cannelton claimed the lives of two Tell City residents and leaves a Hawesville, KY woman in critical condition.

Indiana State Police say it happened around 12:30 a.m. Thursday morning.

ISP says 35-year-old Terry K. Burden, Jr., Tell City, was heading east on State Road 66 near the Cannelton Locks and Dam.

Troopers believe Burden was driving at a high rate of speed, lost control of his car and left the south side of the roadway, striking a tree head on. Upon impact, the vehicle caught fire.

Burden and a front seat passenger, 49-year-old Brian W. Nugent, of Tell City, were both trapped in the vehicle and pronounced deceased by the Perry County Coroner.

A back seat passenger, 27-year-old Sarah M. Metcalf, of Hawesville, KY, was able to climb from the wreckage. State Police say she was first transported to Owensboro and then taken to a hospital in Louisville, and is listed in critical condition.
