St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville welcomed the first baby of the new year.

While a new baby is a life changing experience in most parents lives, there is extra meaning in the birth for this family.

Little Taylen Booker came into the world at exactly 4:36 Wednesday morning. She weighed in at seven pounds, eleven ounces.

Taylen's parents, Melody and Kevin, were at home celebrating New Year's Eve with the rest of their family, when right around 8:00 p.m. she started getting contractions.

She wasn't the only one in the hospital.

"It was a close race the entire time. They told us there was one in front of us, but I was further along. My husband definitely was competitive during the whole labor process. He kept telling me and encouraging me to be number one," Melody said.

Melody and Kevin are high school sweethearts and have been together for 17 years. They tell us that New Year's has always been a special time for them.

"We've always been together since high school on New Year's Eve and always make it a big fun thing. Even with the kids as the kids get older, it's always a family holiday.

This year, it's taken on even more meaning. Four years ago, Melody lost a child, also on New Year's Eve.

"Kind of ironic, I mean it brings everything full circle. Definitely makes us feel even more blessed then we are to begin with. It was just a huge blessing," Melody said.

Now they get to go home, not only with a basket full of goodies, but a new family member.

"I never thought in the world I was going to have a kid on New Year's Day," Kevin said.

"She's very strong willed. She's going to be very spoiled," Melody said.

Taylen is their fourth child.
