Evansville Police believe robbery was the motive in the death of 33-year-old Nicholas Mathew. An autopsy is scheduled for this morning. Mathew's body was found on Christmas Eve at his apartment in the 1100 block of Hatfield Drive. Police went to check on Mathew after receiving a call from concerned family members. Mathews suffered multiple stab wounds. His death is being treated as a homicide.
During the death investigation, police were monitoring a call where a cab driver and passenger were stabbed during and armed robbery in Vanderburgh County. Investigators say they received information shortly after that robbery that they believed might connect the two cases. After a joint response between the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office and EPD, 24-year-old John Vernon Jackson, Jr. was arrested near the robbery scene.
