A family in Washington state received a special holiday surprise when a gold ring that disappeared nearly 20 years ago was found in a storm drain and returned to them.

Years ago, Jack Hamming wanted something special to remind him of his daughters, so he had a ring made with their names inscribed in it and wore it wherever he went.

The ring was thought to have been stolen during a burglary at Hamming's home.

Hamming died four years ago without his cherished ring.

But this week, a public works employee in Mount Vernon, WA found the ring in the sewer. The worker turned the ring over to police, who posted about it on the department's Facebook page.

Less than eight minutes later, one of Hamming's family members saw the post, then told the sisters who called to claim the ring.

"We were like, shocked that it had been found. Much less in a storm drain," said Jack Hamming's daughter, Tracy Shepler.

Police asked them to identify the ring, which was easy because the sisters' names are on the ring, right next to their dad's initials.

The sisters say the ring turned out to be a Christmas present they never saw coming.

"Just really grateful, gratitude. It's a great way tp honor him, to keep it preserved with the family," said Jack Hamming's daughter, Vicki Ingolfsland.
