They are hoping for more adoptions this Christmas instead of returns. The humane society has already taken in several animals just this week.
"People are bring them back during Christmas time and we are completely overwhelmed," caretaker, Brittany Early said.
Adoptions and volunteers usually drop during the holidays because people are too busy and forget about helping out.
There were several animal caretakers on Wednesday who took time out from their Christmas to clean and take care of the animals.
Christmas is all about spending time with your family, so to see them get a nice clean place and a warm place to stay makes me happy. It sure make them happy, too," caretaker, Veronica Vintski said.
If you would like to adopt an animal this holiday season, you can swing by the Owensboro Humane Society just off West Second Street. The shelter is open seven days a week.
